Description

OS EX TENEBRAE FACTA (MOUTH OF SHADOWS)

Done for the cover of a friend's poetry book. I didn't have time to really polish this, so the cover will be different.

Inspired by Theodor DeBry's Illustrations for Robert Fludd's books.

Let us analyse the elements:

ANCHOR:
The anchor means Salvation: for some reason Salvation is stopped by the hand of God. The anchor is ascending, revealing that the Evil is below.

THE MONSTER-HEART: Human emotion subject to the tribulations of the 10 ITEMS NAILED TO THE HEART (see). It is mainly killed by an inverted Saint James' Cross (see SWORD). The inversion is not Satanic, it's just a hint to a different way of Redemption.

ROPE: The rope and the anchor mean Salvation. The rope creates relationships of meaning between the anchor, the pelican, the heart, and practically everything in the picture.

SWORD: The Cross of Saint James (here inverted) was always conceived as a sword given to writers who were salient in the affairs of war.

JUPITER'S SYMBOL: I originally wanted to include all of the important symbols of the Alchemical Work. I only put the Jupiter symbol for the sake of a clean design.

THE EYES OF GOD: An imperfect number of eyes of God also try to propose a different salvation, not the common, given by tradition and the institution of Church.

THE HAND OF GOD: The hand of Christ (God) stops the anchor. He doesn't want the Ill Heart to be saved by the Anchor of Grace. He wants it to suffer and be purified by pain (see 10 ITEMS), revealing that Salvation might have a hint of Pain in it.

10 ITEMS NAILED TO THE HEART: They mean pain, tribulation and the wide variety of thing that can make the heart suffer. But in this drawing they're positive, just like the lances, spears and daggers that go through the bull in a bullfight. The contrary reference are the daggers that go through Mary's Heart in the tradition of the 'Dolorosa' Virgin.

PELICAN WINGS: The Pelican is a bird of Sacrifice. The fact that its wings are behind the heart means that behind everything there's a Christian vision of sacrifice and immolation. In the Alchemical tradition, the blood was the liquid that damped the Lapis in the final stage of the Work.

THE FOUR HEBREW LETTERS: They mean God, the presence of God in everything. The position of His name in the bottom right is arbitrary.
